Colored Artificial Grass Installation

Everyone could use a little more color in their life. So why not start with your lawn? Learn about how customers are implementing colored synthetic grass in their spaces. Hear why so many people love the idea of using a non-traditional color.

What is Colored Grass?

Colored artificial grass is just as it sounds. It's made of synthetic materials that are designed to mimic the look and feel of natural grass. However, the colors get a little more fun. While many think synthetic grass has always only been green, that's just simply not the case. We can get our hands on almost any color you request for your project. Blue, grey, purple, white, orange, and even black. While most homeowners aren't jumping at the idea to make their entire lawn pink, there are a few scenarios where installing colored grass enhances a space.

Colored Grass Features

Before opting for colored grass, it's important to know that it does vary from regular artificial grass in certain categories. Keep reading to find out the specs of these grass materials.

  • Density: Colored grasses have a lower density than most. They are typically 28oz in weight, which is significantly lower than most green artificial grasses.
  • Blades: Blades of colored glasses are short and thin with a minimum amount of filler. However, they stand up with confidence due to their lightweight and relatively thick backing. With v-shape blades, the material provides depth to texture when looking at it from a variety of angles.
  • Cushioning: Colored artificial grass is not the most padded material. It can be compared to stepping on a sweater, while 60oz weight green artificial grass makes it feel like stepping on a thick comforter.
  • Softness: Colored artificial grass blades are usually thin and soft. They are so light that standing up without infill is typically not a problem.

Pros

  • Easy Cleaning: Because the blades are shorter and thinner, cleaning and brushing the surface of colored grass is very simple. A simple hose down will suffice and a rotating brush will easily comb through each blade to maintain their upright position.
  • No Need for Infill: As mentioned above, the material is so lightweight that the need for infill is eliminated. On top of saving on infill costs, maintenance gets even easier. Without infill, the area can be vacuumed to remove any light debris. For this reason, this installation method has become common on balconies and rooftops.

Cons

  • Bounce: As mentioned above, this material doesn't provide much shock absorption due to its lightweight structure.
  • Temperature: This material can become hot on high-temperature days under direct sun exposure. This can be prevented by providing shade or watering the surface to keep it cooler.

Common Uses

  • Sports Fields: This is probably where you'll most commonly see colored artificial grass used. Many universities and sports clubs take the opportunity to embellish their turf fields with their colors and logos. This adds a customized feel and makes the field look even more professional.
  • Playgrounds: To encourage creativity and playfulness, schools and daycares are beginning to feature colored grass on their playgrounds. Remember though, the material is not highly cushioned and we would only recommend using colored grass on playgrounds if you install a padding system underneath to provide shock absorption while children play.
  • Enhance Gardens and Backyards: Some homeowners are using colored grass around pools, patios, and existing landscaping as a pop of color. This brings more color to even the dullest areas.
